Resolve skin allergies without steroids or prescription diets
Maggie had battled with itchy skin her entire life. Her parents had fed her Iams since she was a puppy. As a young dog, she developed recurrent hot spots and dry, flaky skin. In the summer months, she suffered from a bumpy rash in her axilla (armpits) and groin.
By age 6, the itching and redness had become widespread and Maggie was losing her fur. Her vet recommended Purina HA and z/d Ultra prescription diets, but there was no improvement in Maggie’s symptoms. The assumption was that she would need to remain on low doses of prednisone (a steroid) indefinitely to manage the symptoms.
Maggie’s dad was determined to find a solution that didn’t involve ongoing medication. In his search, he discovered Wags ‘n Wellness. Rather than attempting to switch to yet another dog food, we simply began adding natural whole foods to her diet, one by one. In the first few weeks, sautéed ground turkey was added alongside stomach soothing herbs, probiotics, and enzymes. The itching and redness showed slight improvement. Gradually pureed vegetables and millet, a gluten-free grain, were included.
Within a month, Maggie had successfully transitioned to a nutritionally balanced, natural diet comprised of whole foods. She no longer scratched and chewed herself and her dull, thinning coat was developing a shine and thickness that had not been seen in years. Maggie has a variety of meals in her nutrition plan and dad has come to enjoy cooking up a new batch each week knowing that Maggie is healthier as a result of his efforts!
